What do you put on a Mexican charcuterie board

To keep it a charcuterie board, I kept my grocery list to the very things that make that up: cheese, meat, carbs, vegetables, fruits, dips, nuts, and chocolate. Spicy. Sweet. Savory. The touch of chocolate. Percection. When I was creating this Mexican inspired charcuterie board, I wanted it to be as authentic as I could possibly make it. I didn't want to make it a taco board or fajita board. I also made an effort to add things for picky-eating guests. There's a balance here. I hope you enjoy it!

Can you use queso fresco on a charcuterie board?

Yes! It is a perfect addition to your Mexican charcuterie board. Queso fresco has a mild and milky flavor. Many people enjoy it and therefore I include it on mine for my guests!

    Mexican Charcuterie Board Recipe

    Cheeses

    • Cojita - Salty and milky, cojita cheese can have varying flavors depending on how long it has been aged. If it has been aged for a short amount of time, it will be soft and milky. A longer aged cojita cheese may be firmer with a sharper flavor.
    • Queso Fresco - Similar to cojita but less salty and much milder.
    • Panela - The sweet option! Panela is known to have a very light and sweet molasses-like flavor to it.

    Meats

When choosing meat for your Mexican charcuterie board, look at what is available to you locally. You may be able to find a small Mexican shop nearby with amazing options! If not, work with what you are able to find.

    • Chorizo - Spicy, smoky, and essential for a Mexican charcuterie board!
    • Salami - Savory and delicious! Choose the flavoring you'd like and maybe even opt for salami with an herb or black pepper coating!
    • Prosciutto or Jamon Serrano - What you choose is up to your own taste preferences as well as what is available locally to you. I use prosciutto on my board purely because it was what I was able to find. The flavor is a combination of sweet and savory.

    Bread, crackers, and chips!

    • Tortilla chips - There are so many options. Choose something sort of plain or any flavor of your choice!
    • Plain toasted bread - Cut a baguette into slices, coat with butter or oil, and toast them in the oven before adding to your board.
    • Crackers - Choose something a bit on the plain side or any flavor of your choice!
toasted mini bread slices, round tortilla chips, and round crackers

    Fruits

    • Lime wedges - Guests can grab a lime wedge for their plate and it also adds to the visual appeal of the board.
    • Mango - Sweet and juicy! Help your guests balance the spice with this tropical option.
    • Pineapple - Tart but also sweet, this fruit goes with so much of what is laid out.
    • Dragon fruit - A mild sweetness, somewhat citrusy, and so fresh. Add some dragon fruit to your Mexican charcuterie board for a unique touch!

    Vegetables

    • Mini bell peppers - A spicy and colorful addition to your board!
    • Jalapeños - For those in attendance who love some heat, add some sliced jalapeños to the mix.
    • Sliced cucumbers - Let people have the choice of a cooler option with some cucumber slices.
    • Sliced avocados - Thinly sliced avocados are as lovely as they are versatile on your board!
    • Tomatoes - Any small tomatoes are a delicious and beautiful addition on and/or around the board.
bell peppers, cucumber slices, avocado slices, tomatoes on the vine, and jalapenos

    Nuts & miscellaneous additions

Nuts make a great filler for any open spaces not only visually, but also because they pair well with everything! Almonds, walnuts, and pecans are great Mexican inspired choices for your board. Adding dark chocolate offers another exciting flavor option to the mix! Try it out. You won't be sorry!

    • Almonds.
    • Pecans.
    • Dark chocolate.
    pecans, dark chocolate, and almonds

    Dips

    • Guacamole - This can be enjoyed alone on a chip or alongside other delicious components of the board!
    • Salsa - Mild, medium, hot, or even ones that include fruit or corn work beautifully on this board! The salsa can be eaten on a chip alone or with other elements from the board.

When to serve a Mexican Charcuterie Board

    • Gatherings - A larger size play date with a lot of parents coming around, a small group from church coming by, welcoming new neighbors, or no occasion and just getting together because...why not? Set up this Mexican charcuterie board alongside some beverages to give a variety of options for your guests to snack on while socializing.
    • Holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Cinco de Mayo, birthday parties...you name it! Any holiday where you have a crowd gathering calls for a gorgeous charcuterie board.
    • Gameday - The big game is on and everyone is meeting up at your place. Set this up on the counter before your guests arrive so they can fill their plates and grab a seat quickly!

How to build a Mexican Charcuterie Board

    1. Start by cutting your cheeses as needed and place them around the board.
    2. Anything that is served out of a ramekin goes on the board next such as salsa and guacamole.
    3. Lay out your pieces of bread, chips, and crackers in different places. I like to place them near a cheese they will pair well with!
    4. Fold your meats however you would like and place them around the cheese, crackers, and ramekins.
    5. Fill in open spaces with fruits and vegetables.
    6. Find spots here and there for nuts and chocolate. Sprinkle them into little openings to fill voids.
    7. Add any toothpicks and utensils needed and be sure more toothpicks are placed nearby for your guests to use. Set out plates, bowls, and napkins where they are accessible.

    Tips

    • It's best to place your cheeses and larger items first then fill in around it all!
    • Place utensils for each item on the board with what it is to be used for.
    • Be sure that toothpicks, plates, bowls, napkins, etc are easily accessible as close to the board as you can place them to encourage guests to fill a plate!
