Calendula salve is an absolute necessity in our home! I love to prepare this in a large batch to have on hand for months at a time. Homemade calendula salve can be used year round for many different applications! It is truly a miracle worker on my hands in the wintertime when I am most prone to dry skin. I also love that this salve is gentle enough to use on my little ones as well.

Making calendula infused oil is the first step before making this salve. Once you have that prepared, you’re ready to get creating! This project is perfect for a beginner herbalist looking to gain a new skill. There's nothing quite like completing that first project to motivate and inspire you to keep learning and creating. Making this yourself is a great step towards getting those chemical filled products out of your home. a woman's hand with a wedding ring on reaching for some calendula salve. there are two labelled jars. one is open

Why use calendula in a homemade salve?

Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) has many beautiful benefits for topical use! I choose to use it in salves as it has antifungal, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Calendula is great for just about any homemade skincare product you can think of! dried calendula is pouring out of a glass jar next to a block of beeswax

What is calendula salve good for?

Homemade calendula salve can help to soothe many different skin conditions! It can soothe dry skin prone to rashes, eczema, and sunburn. This salve is also known to support healing cuts, burns, and stings.

Do I have to use beeswax?

Beeswax is used in salves as it firms up the mixture in the end as well as helps to seal in moisture once applied to your skin. There are vegan-friendly options that work in place of beeswax! You can use either soy wax or candelilla wax in your homemade calendula salve.

I use locally sourced beeswax. If you can’t find an apiary nearby, there are plenty of other options online! You can buy a one pound block like I have, pellets, or premeasured one ounce bars!beeswax is chopped and set aside in front of the large block of it

    Calendula salve and scars…

Scars, varicose veins, and acne scarring. While calendula salve may not fully remove these things, it is known to help reduce their appearance. Apply some nightly and see if it works for you!

Storage and shelf life of homemade calendula salve

Thankfully, this salve has a pretty decent shelf life! Store your glass jars or tins in a cool dark place for up to one year. Even though it can last a long time, I highly recommend using it promptly as its properties will begin to weaken over time. If you plan to have other herbal preparations stored alongside your homemade calendula salve, label it and add the date you made it on written there as well!labelled jars ready to place in a cool dark place
