Sea salt scrub is a super easy 2 ingredient DIY that makes the perfect addition to your skincare routine! Make one for yourself and one for a friend. They package up as the most beautiful gifts or even look nice left out decoratively on the bathroom counter!

This DIY sea salt scrub takes just a few minutes to make and is such an easy way to replace store-bought options. Many products at the store have less than desirable ingredients in them and the "better" options available often carry a hefty price tag. There's no need! Just salt and oil will get the job done. You can even add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the mix to give it a scent you love.

Each time you go to make a new batch, you can try a new version! Himalayan salt scrub and a standard salt scrub are also fantastic options. I like to use a brown sugar scrub on my face as I find it to be the gentlest on my sensitive skin!

    • Sea Salt Scrub Recipe

What does a sea salt scrub do?

Sea salt scrub is used on freshly washed (with warm water and soap) skin. It exfoliates gently and is done once or twice a week. Be sure to test on a small patch of skin to be sure it is a good fit for you!

Is sea salt good for a scrub?

Yes! So long as it isn't a very coarse chunky kind, sea salt is a lovely choice for your homemade sugar scrub!

    What you need

    • Sea salt - Fine grain salt is best as it will be the least rough on your skin. Sea salt is a great option! You can also use Himalayan pink salt or table salt.
    • Oil - For this DIY, we will use sweet almond oil but you can also use olive oil or jojoba oil!
    • (Optional) Essential oils - Using 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil makes your salt scrub smell lovely while you use it! This is entirely optional. (Note: Please be sure to use an oil that is meant for topical use and be responsible with use around children and pets.)
    • Airtight container - You can store this product for up to 6 months in a cool dark place using an airtight container.

    Why you'll love this DIY!

    • Easy - This DIY sea salt scrub doesn't require any advanced home cosmetic formulation skills or equipment. You can easily make this in just a few minutes!
    • Natural - Sea salt and oil are all that you need to create this product. You can also add in essential oils if you would like but it is totally optional!
    • Makes a great gift - Use a pretty jar and label to gift this sea salt scrub to a loved one! It is lovely and sure to be used daily. (Warning: they might ask you for another once they run out!)
Can I use essential oils in my scrub?

Yes! Add 5-10 drops of an essential oil that is safe for topical use. Lemon and/or lavender are great choices either on their own or combined! (Note: Use caution around children and pets. Please use essential oils responsibly.)

    Ingredients and supplies

    • ½ cup sea salt
    • 2 tablespoons of oil (jojoba oil, olive oil, or sweet almond oil)
    • Optional: 5-10 drops essential oil of choice (lemon and/or lavender)
    • Airtight jars with lids
    • Spoon
    • Optional: canning funnel

    DIY Sea Salt Scrub Recipe

    1. Combine your sea salt and oil. (Optional: add essential oils)

    2. Stir together ensuring all of the sea salt is covered in the oil.

    3. Transfer to an airtight container with a lid. Use a spoon to do so (optional: use a canning funnel to avoid some of the mess!)

    4. Store in an airtight container in a cool dark place for up to 6 months. Add a label with the product name, ingredients, and date.

    Notes

    • Use a small spoon to scoop your sea salt scrub out to ensure no water gets into it.
    • Before use, shower or bathe with warm water and soap.
    • Sea salt scrub is to be used on damp skin! Never exfoliate dry skin as it can cause microtears.
    • Choosing an oil: Remember, sea salt is white and some oils have a slight coloration to them! If you use olive oil or jojoba oil, there is a chance your scrub may end up with a yellow tint to it. This is lovely for lemon scented salt scrubs and it is totally natural! If you want to avoid this, use sweet almond oil!
    • If using essential oils: use essential oils that are safe for topical use. Use responsibly around children and pets.
    • Label the jar with the product name, ingredients, and date. Store for up to 6 months in an airtight container in a cool dark place.
