Making a popcorn garland is inexpensive, beautiful, and super easy to do! Their timeless charm adds such a cozy feel to your home that can't be explained, just felt.
Having a simple and slow Christmas can be as simple as taking the time to put your hand to a few crafts. This time of year can feel very busy and crazy. Making a popcorn garland can be quick with a short length of string or you can set aside a little more time to make it quite long. If you sit down for just 5 minutes a day to make a short length of your garland to tie on to the previous one, you can make this a small part of your day. Slowing down to make a popcorn string is a small way to savor the season.
There is a slightly Victorian and classic feel to hanging a popcorn garland in your home. This old-fashioned timelessness ensures it won't be something that looks dated in your home, no matter what the latest trends are.
Some other easy handmade Christmas decorations to consider making this year are salt dough ornaments, a dried orange garland, a cranberry garland, orange pomanders, beeswax ornaments, or a simple festive paper bunting. Any (or all) of these decorations will look beautiful on display alongside your popcorn garland!

- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Scissors
How to make a popcorn garland
- Pop your popcorn according to the specifications listed on the product.
2. Allow your popcorn to cool completely.
3. Thread your needle with your desired length of string. See notes!
4. Take one piece of popcorn and carefully poke your needle from one side of it to the other.
5. Pull your popcorn to the end of the string. Secure the end by tying the string around the piece of popcorn.
6. Continue stringing popcorn until you are almost to the end of your thread. Secure this end the same way by tying the string off around the last piece of popcorn.
Notes
- I find it easiest to work with small lengths of string at a time. This makes it less likely to tangle up on you and it is much easier to move your pieces of popcorn down a shorter length. You can join multiple strings together at the end if you would like it to be longer!
- String one piece at a time in order to avoid lots of pieces breaking. Feed the piece all the way to the end each time.
- Hang your popcorn string around your tree, across a curtain rod in the window, hang across your mantle, outside on a tree in the yard, or wherever else you like to decorate in your home!
