Slowing down to make a popcorn string is a small way to savor the season.

There is a slightly Victorian and classic feel to hanging a popcorn garland in your home. This old-fashioned timelessness ensures it won't be something that looks dated in your home, no matter what the latest trends are.

What you need

• Plain popcorn - Buy plain or very lightly buttered popcorn for this project.
• Sewing needle - A very thin and sharp needle is needed so it can be fed through each piece of popcorn without breaking them.
• String - Sewing thread is used to create a popcorn string.
• Scissors - Use scissors to cut your desired length of string!

How to style it

• On the tree - Wrap your popcorn garland around your tree from top to bottom for a lovely, classic, and homey feel!
• Across the mantle - String it across the mantle alongside your stockings.
• In the window - Secure each end of your popcorn garland to both sides of a curtain rod to hang in the window.
• Outdoors - Bring your popcorn string outside and wrap it around a tree to enjoy from the window.

Supplies

• Plain popcorn (or as lightly buttered as you can find)
• Sewing needle
• Thread
• Scissors

How to make a popcorn garland

1. Pop your popcorn according to the specifications listed on the product.

2. Allow your popcorn to cool completely.

3. Thread your needle with your desired length of string. See notes!

4. Take one piece of popcorn and carefully poke your needle from one side of it to the other.

5. Pull your popcorn to the end of the string. Secure the end by tying the string around the piece of popcorn.

6. Continue stringing popcorn until you are almost to the end of your thread. Secure this end the same way by tying the string off around the last piece of popcorn.

Notes

• I find it easiest to work with small lengths of string at a time. This makes it less likely to tangle up on you and it is much easier to move your pieces of popcorn down a shorter length. You can join multiple strings together at the end if you would like it to be longer!
• String one piece at a time in order to avoid lots of pieces breaking. Feed the piece all the way to the end each time.
• Hang your popcorn string around your tree, across a curtain rod in the window, hang across your mantle, outside on a tree in the yard, or wherever else you like to decorate in your home!
